8 Things to bring to your newborn session | Raleigh Newborn Photographer

One question I am often asked is "What should I bring to my newborn session.  Hopefully, this blog post will help somewhat.

Here at Aurora D Photography, I try to make everything really easy for you.  I want you to come to your session, relax, browse the internet, have a snack, maybe even catch up on some sleep and leave the work of photography to myself and my assistant.  Even so, there are a few things you might want to throw into that diaper bag before the session.

  1. A buttoned or zipped up outfit for your baby.  Why?  Well, we try to keep a very calm, quiet studio, and it’s much easier to take an outfit off of your little one when we don’t have to take it off over his or her head.  Don’t have one?  Don’t worry, it’s not a deal breaker (not many of these things are), but if you have one, now is a great time to break it out!
  2. A Pacifier.  This one is definitely contentious.  My own babies wouldn’t have taken a pacifier (it would have been launched unceremoniously across the room).  However, if you have one, bring it along.  Even if you think your newborn won’t use it, you might be surprised.  I’ve convinced many a baby to use a pacifier for ten minutes or so (except, apparently, my own).
  3. Extra Diapers. I keep extra diapers just in case, so if you forget this one, I’ve got you covered.  But if you have a sensitive baby or are cloth diapering, don’t forget to bring a few extras along.  Speaking of diapers, if baby poops on my props, don’t panic, yours will neither be the first or the last!
  4. Extra bottles.  If you’re nursing, you’ve got this one covered, but if you are bottle feeding at all, be sure to bring extra along.
  5. A plain black or white shirt for dad.  Or bring one of each!  I prefer dads wear a plain t shirt or go topless.  It’s a nice, clean look, and easy to wash if baby has an accident.
  6. Clothing for your family. This one isn’t always necessary.  I have a great collection of maternity and new mom clothing to choose from as well as some gorgeous outfits for siblings.  But if you have something specific you want to wear, bring it along.  If using my outfits, mom should bring a nude bra and underwear as undergarments.
  7. Special props. Do you have a special prop you want to include in your photo?  Bring it along. But be sure to let me know beforehand so that I can plan our sets accordingly.
  8. Makeup and hair accessories. Even better, ask me about my amazing hair stylist who can come and pamper you while you relax before it’s time for your close up!

Preparing for your newborn session is really very easy.  Once you arrive, I provide snacks, extra diapers, extra wipes, and almost anything else you are going to need.  And don't worry, we will have plenty of opportunities before your session to discuss and plan your session.
